About this Event

“Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” – Jane Jacobs

In early May, people around the world honour visionary activist and writer, Jane Jacobs. On the eve of the Vancouver Jane’s Walks weekend, the Walas Innovation Centre will be screening the award-winning documentary about Jacobs at 7 pm at 1489 Frances Street.

In the film, Citizen Jane, Jacobs takes on New York construction kingpin Robert Moses who planned to raze lower Manhattan for a highway which threatened the very soul of the communities. As her work evolved, Jane championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building and urban living.

Jane Jacobs is a significant inspiration for World of Walas projects. Passionately believing that cities are for everyone, Jacob’s activism and writing showcases how cities can work well if everybody raises their voice and is involved in creating them.

Our sister Innovations Centre in Hamburg Germany will also be screening the Citizen Jane film as people in over 50 countries embark on Jane’s Walks in their neighbourhoods.

Stay tuned for an East Vancouver Jane’s Walk and reserve your seat now for Thursday, May 2’s screening at Dudoc Vancouver.
